Top Signs Your Roof Needs Repairing

Hole in roof with repair work being done

Your roof is a crucial component of the house, and while it’s supposed to belong-lasting, certain elements such as rain, snow, sun exposure, and wind can affect its durability. But before you jump the gun and install a new roof, you probably need a repair. Look out for these common signs that your roof needs repair.

A Sagging Roof

A sagging roof often occurs due to water damage. When the roofing board traps moisture, it absorbs the moisture slowly by slowly losing its sturdiness; this will cause the roof to bend or sag in the most affected areas. Without a repair, the roof will continue to droop, and eventually, the whole top may come down.

Wet Spots Inside the Home

If you have a ceiling board between the roofing beams and the house, you might notice wets pots in the ceiling that imply water had dripped from the roof into the house.

Additionally, you may also notice small puddles of water in the attic, meaning you have a hole on the roof where water has dripped into the house.

Because of excess moisture, you may also notice green, brown, or black spots on your ceilings, symbolizing moss and fungi growth on your roof. When water sits on the ceiling too long, the water doesn’t evaporate, and thick patches of moss can start to develop.

Still, within the house, you may also notice water stains on the ceiling and walls. If the roof has a leaking spot, water will pass by there, causing brown and black streaks. As time goes by, the water will often collect deposits from the roof, and the staining will usually deepen.

Damaged Shingles

When the roof is damaged, your shingles may crack, curl, or go missing, meaning they need repair from a professional. If the damage on shingles is severe, then the roof is likely equally in bad condition. Moreover, if the shingles appear dark in certain top spots, it means they likely no longer work to keep away moisture. Instead, they trap moisture, causing them to look dark, dirty, and always wet.

Outside Light in the Attic

If you spot sunlight from outside beaming into your attic, the roof has a hole. A repair is imminent because the same gap will allow in water during the rainy season, causing severe water damage to your house.

Granules in Your Gutters or on a Walkway or Driveway

If you use composite or asphalt shingles on your roofs, the granules on the top layer may start to peel off after sometime. Now wear and tear is quite common, but if you spot piles of granules in the gutters or on the driveway, the damage often increases.

Accumulation of granules is also typical in the rainy season or winter and during storms. So if you spot large black particles after a rainstorm, then your roofs have damage as well.

Sudden Increase in Energy Costs

Energy bills may rise if you have to spend more on your HVAC unit to cool or heat your home. Ideally, you have an estimate of how much you need to pay, but if you notice you’re paying more, this would mean you have air leaks in the home that caused the air conditioner to work harder.

Air leaks are common in the roof, but if the air gaps increase in number or diameter, your HVAC system has to compensate for this loss. Hence why you have to pay more.

The common denominator amongst all these signs is water damage. If you spot any water damage in your home, the most likely culprit is your roof.
